Paleo Picnic

Yesterday at Kirby Cove with B. You cross the bridge, hang a left and hike down a steep mile and there you are, isolated and protected forest and beach, maybe a dozen other people, but with a front row view to this beautiful city. Chicken, avocado and cashews, fruit salad. And good company.

Beautiful. I role my eyes at the "I can't believe it's not Gaia worship" environmentalists, but places like this should be preserved. At the risk of sounding maudlin, the Earth really is beautiful. The more I learn about the processes and time that went into making it what it is today, the more in awe of it I am.

Science doesn't always kill the pagans' awe of nature. Sometimes, it increases it.

Beautiful it is. Endlessly so. Aside from a beautiful man, what is there more beautiful than the Earth?

Well, the universe as a whole is pretty incredible too. My interest in astronomy extends as far as staring slack-jawed at pictures of nebulae. I even thought of an aphorism for a Christianity-based thriller novel I never wrote, in which Archangel Michael described Lucifer as "beautiful as a nebula, and as radiant as a neutron star."

This certainly sounds like a nice day --- good company, beautiful spot --- what's the deal? No salami sandwiches?

Slacker picnic.
