Turn me the other cheek

One of the Two Fat Ladies, while cooking a dish supposedly originating from the American South, expressed her anxious suspicion and horror that her Bristol merchant ancestors had dabbled in the slave trade. "So-called Christians," says she, "treating other people horribly."

Sigh.

Since slave-holding has been a well-nigh universal institution, ask yourself who else is tying themselves into knots about what their ancestors did?

Only the descendants of the only group of people that ever ended slavery: White Christians.

Sometimes White Christian (and Christian-derived liberal, especially) guilt about things they had nothing to do with makes me wanna smack someone. And when they turn the other cheek, I'd like to slap that one, too.
