People don't want to know that Islam is spatio-temporally aggressive, an expansionist and extravert theocracy convinced of its uniqueness and superiority. Plus, Muslims are uninfected by White Western liberal guilt and play the race card shamelessly. Note that this move was spearheaded by a Pakistani immigrant.
In Ex Cathedra's post-American republic, there will be freedom of religion, except for one.

Waiting for the first gay bar to get torched, or gay activist brutally murdered. Then the gay community will see where they really stand on the totem pole of liberal victim groups. I fear things are about to get very ugly in San Fran.
Things have gotten ugly in Britain, though. The English Defense League's leader was on O'Reilly the other night, he has confirmed that there is all-out street warfare between Britons and Muslims. Parliament has already denounced them as a "far-right wing islamophobe group," but after that soldier's murder, more Britons will probably be sympathetic to the EDL. And they have an LGBT branch, so they can't be accused of being fascists, traditional ones at least.

Madness. So busy getting hysterical and misty-eyed over men and women who use their money and votes for their own ends, they can't see the real threat facing them. Even if there was some sort of massive evangelical political ground swell, I doubt things would change much for LGBTs. Contrary to popular belief, most Christians aren't interested in killing people they have moral disagreements with.
So, how long do you think it will be before San Francisco starts closing gay bars and bans gay pride parades because Muslims complain that it offends them? I think you'll hear about it by 2016. Maybe even sooner.
